The forbidden waters of Thermaic gulf

Thermaic gulf is the gulf of the Aegean sea on Thessaloniki, the second biggest city in Greece. A walk on the coast is a usual habit of the citizens of Thessaloniki and a "must do" for every visitor of the city.
Apart from the view and the cool breeze accompanied by the sea sent on the air, one can see people fishing at the end of the dock. At that sight a question arises : can they eat their catch? The answer is a very strict no.

                                                                     The polluted waters (by usay.gr)

The waters of the Thermaic gulf are extremely polluted, so not only one cannot eat the fishes but it is also forbidden to swim in these waters. Besides, who would like to swim next to dead mice and rats? Bottles, papers, plastic bags and tin cans are few of the things among others one can see floating on the waters right next to the dock. Apart from these items, the waters are polluted with factory and sewage waste.
On the other hand, there are some measures taken by the mayor of Thessaloniki, mr. Boutaris, in order to decrease the damage of the gulf. The surface of the Thermaic is being cleaned by a special boat, that collects the garbage floating around.  This action benefits both the quality and the look of the gulf. Of
course that measure is not enough to change the properness of the waters for anything more than a walk next by.

                 T
he gulf is a natural sight worth preserving. Thessaloniki has always been related to the sea. All its roads and paths lead there. A walk by the sea is an experience everyone must have, either local or foreign. At sunrise and sunset the sky is full pf magical colours and the cool breeze combined with the view can easily affect ones mood and make them daydream.
