How to not just see environment but also taking care of it

TEXT/PHOTO: Judith Alberth

As travellers we are always interested to see the environment around us. We maybe should try not to destroy it with too much pollution. How to do so as a traveller? As we always need to go from one point to an other we should try not to use that much of cars or maybe travel even without buses. That's the reason why I tried to explore Thessaloniki by bike. To be honest, Thessaloniki is not a city which is made for riding a bike. The traffic is not just awful at rush-hour it is hell. Driving on the streets by bike can be quite dangerous. The first time I heard about renting a bike was at the bike marathon in autumn. The Erasmus Student Network (ESN) was helping the students to rent the bikes and follow the marathon, which was supposed to be a sign for the city to improve more bicycle routes in the centre.

Today I finally did some research and rent a bike with one of my friends. I went to the BikeIt rental at the seaside, to the left of the white tower.(http://www.enjoythessaloniki.com/travel/travelling-around-thessaloniki-by-bike/) On the way there we already saw a lot of people on this special bikes on which you can sit with three, four or six people. You don't need a reservation for a bike, they have a lot of them. We paid eight euros together, four euros each. For this prize you can rent it for an hour. When we started I was wondering how you ride a bike like that but it was very easy. I felt good because we did some sports but actually you don't have to move that much and when your partner is not looking at you, you can even stop to pedal and he maybe don't get it.

If you are in the mood I can appreciate to drink a small cold beer during the one hour drive. Because your are going on the lines next to the seaside you have a great view for the whole time. We did a small brake at the concert hall to watch the sun going down and coloring the sea purple. The bigger bikes are very nice for families, we saw a lot of them on the road. Moreover it is good for people who have difficulties with walking. On the bike you can see very much of the seaside and the port which is one of the most important environment in Thessaloniki. I thought these bikes are maybe an alternative for the tour-bus but I have to admit that the bicycles are not working like that. You can just use them for the seaside on the routes they marked for you, the bus isn't going that way anyway.

Still I have to say it was worth it. If you want to have a funny one hour, doing a bit of sport and watching the seaside, renting a bike is perfect for an afternoon-activity. At the BikeIt rental you can also rent single bikes for doing real sport. If you stay in Thessaloniki for longer you can rent a bike at Thessbike (i-bike) for six month. (http://ibike.thessbike.gr/en/charges-en )You can get a card to charge and when you need a bike you just go there and you can use it for a day or a few months. Coming to a conclusion, the city is pretty hard to explore by bike because of the traffic and the hill but if you are brave enough you can see spots out of the centre without using the bus and destroyingthe environment you want to admire. For a fun activity it is really nice to rent one of the specialbikes and drive a long the beautiful seaside of Thessaloniki.

Recycle is life
text : Panagiota Manta

Do you like to recycle? Do you believe that recycling is the best way to save the environment? If you do, in Thessaloniki in Greece you will have the opportunity not only to recycle but also to recreate things from recyclable materials

In Thessaloniki, the second biggest town in Greece, from 2011 they placed bins all over the town. they put the bins in every corner of the city so it is very easy to find one. These bins are characteristically blue and they are only for recyclable materials such as glass, plastic and paper. These bins and the habit of recycling started back then and they are the way to reduce the trash of the city, and the way to protect the environment, in order to save the raw materials that came from the nature. The first two years 3.5% of Thessaloniki’s citizens recycled, but after 2013 this percentage raised year by year. Also in Thessaloniki you can find bins in which you can throw electric devises or batteries and they recycle them too. Yoy will find this kind of bins usually in front of  electrical shops. This is an alternative way of living and in Thessaloniki you have the possibility to live this way.

The most interesting about recycling in Thessaloniki are the special bins, they called retributive recycle, and there is one in every area of the city. These bins are special because they are huge and because when you recycle something you get a receipt that inform you that you donated  1cent for every plastic bottle you recycle and 5cents for every glass bottle you recycle in an organization called ‘’smile of a child’’. In that way not only you protect the environment by recycling your trash but also you help some children to get a better life.

Also, in Thessaloniki you will find many organizations and also individual people who select recyclable materials and they transform them into something new. In that way, they recycle their trash and protect the environment but also they create new practical and stylish things. That people full of imagination and after a few hours of work they create something new. The municipality on Thessaloniki , two years ago, organized seminars in which they taught you how to create new things that you can use in your house from recyclable things in order not to throw away anything and not to burden the environment. After that they made a presentation of the things they have  created to sold them

So, in Thessaloniki you will have the opportunity to recycle and protect the environment you live in and to be creative with the things you think are useless.

So…recycle for a better life. Look for the blue bins and the special ones, and if you feel creative search your trash, put your imagination on and create your own new things.

The forbidden waters of Thermaic gulf

Thermaic gulf is the gulf of the Aegean sea on Thessaloniki, the second biggest city in Greece. A walk on the coast is a usual habit of the citizens of Thessaloniki and a "must do" for every visitor of the city.
Apart from the view and the cool breeze accompanied by the sea sent on the air, one can see people fishing at the end of the dock. At that sight a question arises : can they eat their catch? The answer is a very strict no.

                                                                     The polluted waters (by usay.gr)

The waters of the Thermaic gulf are extremely polluted, so not only one cannot eat the fishes but it is also forbidden to swim in these waters. Besides, who would like to swim next to dead mice and rats? Bottles, papers, plastic bags and tin cans are few of the things among others one can see floating on the waters right next to the dock. Apart from these items, the waters are polluted with factory and sewage waste.
On the other hand, there are some measures taken by the mayor of Thessaloniki, mr. Boutaris, in order to decrease the damage of the gulf. The surface of the Thermaic is being cleaned by a special boat, that collects the garbage floating around.  This action benefits both the quality and the look of the gulf. Of
course that measure is not enough to change the properness of the waters for anything more than a walk next by.

The gulf cleaned up (by Loukia Skarlatidi)

                 T
he gulf is a natural sight worth preserving. Thessaloniki has always been related to the sea. All its roads and paths lead there. A walk by the sea is an experience everyone must have, either local or foreign. At sunrise and sunset the sky is full pf magical colours and the cool breeze combined with the view can easily affect ones mood and make them daydream.

The Forgotten National Park

Secret paths hidden among lush green jungle vegetation and mirror-blue waters filled with princess-pink flamingo colonies. That is merely the beginning of what Axios Delta National Park has to offer. But no one seems to know about this place.

A short 15-minute bus ride from Thessaloniki and we are in Kalochori, a small suburban area and the gateway to another world. As the streets and the houses end, we are met by a ruby red road, swirling between two bodies of blue water and into the park. In the background, just a rock’s throw away, lies Thessaloniki. Going from the Greek city’s urban concrete environment to the luxuriant wetlands is quite the contrast.

The red road leading into the national park. Kalochori and Thessaloniki are in the background.

Three river deltas run into the Thermaic Gulf and give life to the vast, flat landscape. The Axios, Loudias and Aliakmonas rivers. The park’s full name is the “Axios-Loudias-Aliakmonas Delta National Park”, but using only “Axios” is common. Each year the national park becomes the home to thousands of birds such as pelicans, flamingos, mallards and the glossy ibis. But birds are not the only creatures that benefit from the rich habitat. Bigger animals such as wild horses and water buffalos can be seen in some areas, and on sunny days, snakes like to bake in the warm sun. Just like Thessaloniki, Kalochori has many stray dogs. They can often be found inside the park, where some are being taken care of by local fishermen.

A group of flamingos are sometimes called a "flamboyance"

When there is no wind, even the sea lies perfectly still. The water becomes a mirror. In the right light, the horizon disappears and the sea becomes the sky. Then the cool ocean breeze rolls in. The clear blue surface is rippled with waves, and the scent of salty seawater seeps up the nose and tickles the brain. Many choose to experience the park by car or bike. Gravel roads stretch many miles through the otherwise rugged landscape, allowing visitors to discover most of the far-reached corners. The distances are simply too big to cover by foot. However, only the leather tramps, people willing to overcome a blister or two, are able to go off the beaten paths. To go where few have been before, to find their own way, and to rewrite their maps.

A stray dog rests with Kalochori in the background.

To find the most hidden and mysterious places, you must go off-road. But beware of snakes

Asking the locals in Thessaloniki, surprisingly few have been to the national park, and surprisingly many have never even heard of it. Especially considering its proximity to the city and the cheap one-euro bus tickets. So if you have a day to spend in Thessaloniki, remember the forgotten national park.
